Description
The Chinese term “sancai” (three colors) refers to polychrome glazes, with the colors green, brownish-orange, and beige predominating. Cobalt blue also occurs very frequently as fourth color. This simple type of colored design for ceramics was developed during the Tang period; lead glazes make ceramics more durable and waterproof. Besides figural burial objects, utilitarian ceramics were also covered with tricolored glaze. “Sancai” ceramics were exported as early as the Tang period to central and west Asia, influencing ceramic techniques and design in Islamic countries and subsequently European ceramics of the late Middle Ages.
