Description
-
"White ground" (jishiro 地白), "main stencil" (omogata 主型). Together with OR 3925-126 a motif results from: snow crystals (yukiwa 雪輪) with pine branche motif and bats.
The pattern of evergreen pine trees that withstand the severe winter cold is auspicious and a symbol of both longevity and sobriety, as well as the prosperity of the descendants.
In ancient China, the word "bat" could also mean "to turn into happiness", so this positive connotation was also transferred to the bat in Japan. Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō 市川團十郎 used the auspicious bat motif as one of his trademarks.
