Description
-
The silverware sold under the name “Flaches Modell” [Flat Model]—this set was produced in silver for Fritz and Lili Waerndorfer, the financier of the Wiener Werkstätte, between 1903 and 1910—is among Josef Hoffmann’s most radical designs. Each of the pieces of silverware seems to be punched out of sheet metal, after which some of them, according to their function, were bent into spoons or forks. The four spherical elements at the bottom of the handle and the monogram “FLW” (Fritz and Lili Waerndorfer) soften the progressive impression somewhat. The set consists of a knife, spoon, fork, fish knife, fish fork, dessert knife, dessert fork, tea or coffee spoon, espresso spoon, butter knife, cheese knife, stew spoon, ladle, sauce spoon, cake server, sausage serving fork, roast serving fork, roast serving spoon, egg or ice cream spoon, salt spoon, and sugar tongs.
