Description
"White ground" (jishiro 地白). Stencil dealers' seal (shōin 商印) at the bottom of the stencil. The blossom of the plum (BAI/ume 梅) is a symbol of the beginning of spring, as it begins to bloom in the cold season. The plum blossom pattern is auspicious and represents longevity, endurance and prosperity of the descendants. Fukura suzume (fluffed sparrow) is an auspicious motif, as the name can also be written with the characters fuku福 (happiness), ra 良 (good) and suzume 雀 (sparrow) or with the characters fuku福 (happiness), rai来 (coming) and suzume 雀 (sparrow). Its 'fluffed and puffed-up' shape gives the impression of a good, carefree life.
