Description
Kolo Moser numbers among the inost influential Viennese Jugendstil artists. As a cofounder of the Secession, a contributor to the publication Ver Sacrum, a teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts and a cofounder of the Wiener Werkstätte, he played a central role in the artistic developments of his era. Numerous international trips allowed him extensive contact with Europe's network of Art Nouveau artists, and he also took inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement and Japanese art. The influence of the latter is clear to see in his textile designs. Around 1899, when this particular one originated, he was designing frequently for arts-and-crafts producers. The woven fabric shown here, a realization of Moser's “Dessin 4003” entitled “Schwämme”, was produced by Johann Backhausen & Söhne. Backhausen commissioned designs from a great number of the era's well-known progressive designers and became an important factor behind Jugendstils dissemination. (Barbara Karl, 2013)
