Description
-
The shape of this unique vase corresponds to a “gu” of the Shang period (16th–11th centuries B.C.), a vase-shaped cult utensil, its patinated bronze imitated in the glaze. Technically and artistically it is a masterpiece, surely meant for the imperial collection—as corroborated by the gilt period mark. Only a small group of Qianlong-period porcelains with this antique effect exists worldwide. At the time, archaic forms were embellished with modern decorations in gold, which lends these vessels an aura of preciousness.
