Description
-
This bowl has special significance in the history of Chinese enamel. With a wide border and slightly chamfered rim it shows the influence of Islamic handicraft—a form that can be traced from Persia to Spain. Moreover, it is one of the few cloisonné pieces from the Ming period with a narrative decoration. It shows the palace of the celestial mother Xiwangmu, the foremost female deity of Daoism. Her palace in the West Great Mountain is the most resplendent imaginable. It is also the scene of grand, festive gatherings of the immortals.
