Description
This type of slender, high-shouldered “plum-branch vase” with a relatively small opening emerged in China during the Song dynasty (960–1279). The cherry-plum tree is the first to bloom and its branches decorate the home as heralds to the approaching spring, an ancient custom that is still alive in East and Southeast Asia. The vases themselves are mostly decorated with blossom motifs, and the vase form, too, is still used today. (Wieninger, Johannes)
