Description
-
The cabinet was a typical piece of representative furniture of the 16th–18th centuries. It was made using the costliest materials and most diverse craft techniques. In this case the surface has been covered with ebony veneer and Eger (Cheb) relief marquetry. This cabinet came into the possession of the Emperor Karl VI as a gift from the town of Cheb. Its iconography is also constructed with appropriate reference to this; it has the likenesses of Karl VI and his spouse Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel gracing the top border. On the inside of the cabinet doors there is a portrayal of the four continents and the four world dominating powers. The 16 drawer fronts bear allegorical representations and portrait medallions of the kings and emperors of the House of Hapsburg, from Rudolf I to Joseph I. The cabinet belonged to the
furnishings of Schloss Laxenburg until 1941.
